Astrophysics Science Division

The Astrophysics Science Division supports the GSFC astrophysics projects by providing scientific leadership and supports a research program to achieve NASA's strategic science goals. The key questions addressed by the Divisions research programs include:

  • How do galaxies, stars, and planetary systems form and evolve?
  • What is the diversity of worlds beyond our solar system?
  • Which planets might harbor life?
  • What powered the big bang?
  • What is Dark Energy?
  • What happens to space, time and matter at the edge of a black hole?
  • What are the cycles of matter & energy in the evolving universe?

New Gamma-Ray Burst Smashes Cosmic Distance Record
NASA's Swift satellite and an international team of astronomers have found a gamma-ray burst from a star that died when the universe was only 630 million years old, or less than five percent of its present age. The event, dubbed GRB 090423, is the most distant cosmic explosion ever seen.

Apr 28 - NASA Launches James Webb Space Telescope Educational On-Line Game - "This is a great way to teach children and adults on how simple and complex space telescopes work," said Anita Krishnamurthi (660.1), the Education and Public Outreach Lead for Webb. (Read more)

Apr 28 - New Gamma-Ray Burst Smashes Cosmic Distance Record - "Swift was designed to catch these very distant bursts," said Swift lead scientist Neil Gehrels (661). (Read more)

Apr 17 - Congratulations to the ASD 2009 NASA Honor Award winners: Distinguished Service Medal - Dr. David Leckrone (667); Outstanding Leadership Medal - Steven Ritz (661); Group Achievement Award - BESS Polar Team (661); Public Service Group Achievement - After School Universe Team (660).

Apr 1 - NASA Tech Briefs interviewed Dr. Alexander Kashlinsky (665). (Read more)

Mar 25 - Dr. David Leckrone (667) has been awarded NASA's Distinguished Service Medal. This award is "the highest honor that NASA confers. It may be awarded to any person in the Federal service who, by distinguished service, ability, or courage, has personally made a contribution representing substantial progress to the NASA mission. The contribution must be so extraordinary that other forms of recognition would be inadequate." The medal will be awarded in a ceremony at NASA HQ on April 16.

Feb 13 - SPIE has honored two members of the ASD this year with awards. Dr. Marc Kuchner is the 2009 recipient of the SPIE Early Career Achievement Award. This award is in recognition of Marc's many outstanding achievements which have greatly facilitated the detection and characterization of extra-solar planets. Dr. Neil Gehrels is the 2009 recipient of the SPIE George W. Goddard Award. This award is in recognition of Neil's pioneering contributions in opening the gamma-ray spectral window as its own astronomical discipline though his leadership of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and the Swift mission.
