CVM SEEKS COMMENTS ON DRAFT RISK ASSESSMENT BY FEBRUARY 10
In conjunction with the Center for Veterinary Medicine's (CVM's) December 9-10, 1999, workshop on antimicrobial resistance in food-producing animals, the Center released a draft "Risk Assessment on the Human Health Impact of Fluoroquinolone Resistant Campylobacter Associated with the Consumption of Chicken." This draft was released on the Center's Home Page on the Internet and at the December workshop. FDA's CVM is seeking comments on this draft risk assessment by February 10, 2000.
The risk assessment was intended to determine the feasibility of estimating risk to human health from resistant foodborne pathogens associated with the use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals. Specifically, a mathematical model was derived to relate the prevalence of fluoroquinolone resistant Campylobacter infections in humans associated with the consumption of chicken to the prevalence of fluoroquinolone resistant Campylobacter in chickens.

Comments should be identified with Docket Number 98D-0969. To be considered in CVM's revision of the draft risk assessment, comments should be received by February 10, 2000.
