Overview

Scientific reporting allows health care professionals to make earlier diagnosis of WTC conditions, which leads to more effective treatment. However, scientifically identifying the causes of health problems or conditions is typically very difficult. It's often not possible to determine the specific cause of a given individual's illness or condition. For that reason, it is critical to encourage and promote scientifically rigorous studies and reviews of potential health problems or risk factors. HHS is working to ensure that necessary information is collected in a scientific way and that robust databases are built that can be used by scientists and health professionals to generate strong analyses. HHS also recognizes the importance of scientific or peer review to help ensure that reliable and valid assessments are made regarding any trends and patterns in reported cases. So that new scientific reports are added to the peer-reviewed literature as regularly as possible, HHS is working with a host of organizations to raise awareness and encourage reporting.
