Advisories and Warnings

Airlines:

Smarter Travel features an extensive list of phone numbers, including toll-free, reservations, baggage claims, and frequent flyer, to name but a few. Travel Watch provides telephone numbers of airlines.  There are also directories of car rental agencies, hotels, and cruise lines. Status of flights are available Flight Stats.

Airports:

Aero Planner offers a list of United States and global airports that includes airport names, terminal maps, area codes, and airport codes.  Information on car rentals, insurance, and hotels near airports is also available.  The airport maps can be helpful if you are making connections to other flights.

Cancellations and Delays:

The Federal Aviation Administration maintains the most current information on air travel in the U.S.  The site is searchable by region or airport.  There are real-time displays of re-routes, restrictions, and closures.

Country Travel Warnings:

The Department of State keeps up-to-date alerts and warnings on long-term conditions that make travel dangerous or unstable.  Alerts differ from warnings in that they are short-term conditions which pose imminent risks to the security of U.S. citizens. You can check for warnings by country or by alert.

Weather Alerts:

The National Weather Service offers round-the-clock information on national conditions and forecasts.  For international weather conditions, the Internet Weather Source (also hosted by the National Weather Service) is an excellent resource.

World Fact Book:

The World Fact Book has evolved to be one of the most reliable sources of global knowledge. It was begun in 1943 by the Office of Naval Intelligence and then handed over to the Central Intelligence Agency in 1947. The CIA updates it annually.
