Definition A chemical that stops one nerve cell (neuron) from communicating with the next nerve cell, and decreases or blocks the transmission of nerve impulses. The main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain is gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). See: excitatory neurotransmitter.
