Forestry Program of NWS
Jackson
The forests of Extreme Southeast
Arkansas...Northeast Louisiana and most of Mississippi are an important part of
the region's resources and are managed primarily by the Regional State Forestry
Agencies and the United States Forest Service (USFS) on public lands. Primary
responsibility for providing meteorological support service to Forestry
Interests rests with the Meteorologist-in-Charge at the National Weather
Service Forecast Office in Jackson, Mississippi. The purpose of this Operations
Plan is to provide guidance for all private and public Forestry Interests as to
the meteorological support available from the National Weather Service.
The special program meteorologist(SPM)
for forestry acts as the coordinator for the exchange of weather information
from the National Weather Service to public and private Forestry Interests. As
such, the Forestry SPM is in regular contact with the wildfire and land
management agencies...helping them assess their meteorological needs and
informing them of the National Weather Service products and services available.
Since two or more agencies are being served, strong efforts will continually be
made for agreement on common products, services, and formats to streamline NWS
operations and still meet user requirements.
The Forestry SPM works with the fire control director of the Regional State
Forestry Agencies and the Fire Management Staff Officers of the USFS to
coordinate the program using the most efficient forecast and communication
techniques available. The SPM, with the support of the Meteorologist-in-Charge,
will keep the NWS Staff Forecasters informed and trained in meeting the Forestry
Program Objectives.
Routine temperature forecasts are
generally a small range of values expected in one or more zones. The maximum
temperatures are forecast for daytime periods and the minimum usually occurs
around sunrise. When fronts are forecast to cross the area, conditions could
vary considerably. Normally the zone forecast will be for a 4-5 degree range in
temperature(i.e. mid60s, 63-67, lower 60s, (60-64), near 50 (48-52). At times,
actual conditions in the zone may vary even more due to terrain characteristics
- especially in clear sky and light wind situations at night.
