She and the 6-8 employees she supervises monitor aquatic invertebrates, aquatic vegetation, fish, and water quality in the Mississippi River for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, under contract with USGS. Her job responsibilities include personnel, technical/scientific, public relations, and financial duties. Prior to joining the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as a Water Quality Specialist in January of 1992, Dukerschein's career path included occupations such as microbiologist, medical technologist, free-lance writer/photographer, and high school science teacher. Her college education began in the laboratory (B.S., Medical Technology major, Chemistry minor, University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire-1973). After completing two Master's Degrees at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse--(Education-1988, Biology-1991), she focused on aquatic ecology and has led Wisconsin's Field Station since April, 1992. Dukerschein's current research interests include riverine and wetland ecology, especially as applied to conservation/restoration, aquatic invertebrates, emergent aquatic plants, and habitat monitoring techniques. Dukerschein enjoys writing about science at work and writing poetry or essays in her spare time. Other interests include music, photography, gardening, hiking, camping, and fishing with friends and family. |
