Storm of the Month
The WINNER for February occurred over Yazoo County as a fast-moving comma head
bow echo raced northeastward at nearly 60 mph from the Mississippi River. This storm developed
on the 19th along a cold front and then accelerated into the county during the
evening only to produce a short-lived F1 ranked Tornado along Highway 3 just
northwest of Yazoo City at about 930 pm. The low-topped nature of the storm
made it less impressive from a radar perspective although a clear break in the
convective line was the best clue of a possible tornado. The Base Velocity
4 panel taken at 914 pm cst indicated Rotational Velocity couplet of 41knots at
about 5500 feet(upper right panel). The broader rotation persists until the
storm reaches Yazoo City but the actual small scale
rotation of the tornado itself was never seen on radar. Finally in reality, a
damage track of less than 1 mile was surveyed with some 15 houses suffering
serious window or roof damage.
