Storm of the Month
The APRIL WINNER occurred in southern Bolivar County on the afternoon of the 16th
around 445 pm near Shaw about 85 miles northwest of the radar. This storm had VILs
peaking in the upper 50s kg/m*m accompanied by a strong Reflectivity core of
65-70dBz. The Rotational structure was not that impressive however a favorable
sheared environment and mesoscale boundary from a previous thunderstorm convinced us to
issue Tornado Warnings for this storm. The 4-Panel image below confirms the
Weak Echo Region and intensity of this storm as our also Severe Hail Algorithm
just about maximized during this volume scan with a hail size of 3 inches in
diameter predicted(which would be larger than baseball size). Moments later a
visual confirmation of a Tornado crossing rural areas was reported by Law
Enforcement just north of Shaw.
Notice especially the vertical extent of greater than 65dBz(white) returns to 25
thousand feet - a certain indication for Thunderstorm Severity.
