LINDA AREY SKLADANY APPOINTED TO DIRECT FDA'S OFFICE OF EXTERNAL RELATIONS

Dr. Lester M. Crawford, FDA Deputy Commissioner, today announced the appointment of Ms. Linda Arey Skladany as FDA’s Senior Associate Commissioner in charge of the new Office of External Relations.

"I am delighted by the addition of Linda to the strong leadership of our agency," Dr. Crawford said. "She comes to us with an extensive background in government service and public policy that's just right for her new job, which is directing FDA's relations with the public and important constituent groups."

Ms. Skladany, a lawyer, served for the last seven years as the Vice President for Congressional Relations, for the Washington, D.C. firm of Parry, Romani, DeConcini and Symms. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of the Foundation for Environmental and Economic Progress (1993-1995); Attorney, of counsel, in the Washington, D.C. office of Holland & Hart, a major western law firm (1990-1993); and Commissioner and Acting Chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. She also served as a Presidential appointee on the United States Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations (1988-1989).

Ms. Skladany's earlier activities included candidacy in the 1988 special election in Virginia's fifth Congressional district, and designing and executing communications and outreach programs as Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison and Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan (1985-1987). She was also director of the Executive Secretariat in the U.S. Department of Transportation (1984-1985); and Special Assistant to the Secretary of Education and the Attorney General of the United States (1981-1983).

Ms. Skladany received a B.A. from the College of William and Mary, an M.A. in Education from Wake Forest University, and a J.D. from the University of Richmond. In l994, she was appointed to the Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary by Governor George Allen, where she chaired the student affairs committee. She is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar Association.

In her new office, Ms. Skladany will oversee FDA's Advisory Committee Oversight and Management Staff, Office of Executive Secretariat, Office of the Ombudsman, Office of Public Affairs, and Office of Special Health Issues.
