New Standards to Help Avoid Adulteration Adulterated and contaminated medicines pose an increasing risk to patients throughout the world, as seen in recent tragedies involving the blood thinner heparin and the sweetener glycerin. USP has released, or is in the process of revising new standards for these widely used products, as well as for the related sweeteners propylene glycol, and sorbitol solution, along with information on how it is working through updated compendial standards to help keep dangerous ingredients out of the U.S. market. Metal Impurities Metal impurities can find their way into drugs and dietary supplements through exposure from a variety of sources including foods, water and air. USP is updating its metal impurities standard by specifying the list of metals to be controlled, developing threshold consensus toxicologically–based limits and providing a modern default procedure to monitor metal impurities.
