Mouse Genetics Research Facility
Operating Hours and Performance


The Mouse Genetics Research Facility, an ORNL User Facility, is located in the William L. and Liane B. Russell Laboratory for Comparative and Functional Genomics, a state-of the art research vivarium. The facility has a large a large collection of mouse strains that propagate mutations induced, over a period of nearly 6 decades, by radiation and chemical in various stages of male or female gametogenesis. The facility opened in January of FY 2004, and is just beginning to develop a research user base.

Scheduled operating hours are based on staffing available for users and mouse care. The facility, located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, functions and is monitored 24 hours per day in accordance with requirements of the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.

Operating hours PEP:  The MGRF operated at 100% for Q2 of FY 07. 


The new “Mouse House” was officially commissioned May 7, 2004. The rodent facility has five distinct areas:

  • 15 animal housing rooms and a Quarantine suite with 6 cubicles
  • Research Support space to include 3 procedure rooms, a behavioral suite, and a microinjection room
  • Personnel areas to include 2 locker rooms, 3 offices, and one Training and Conference room.
  • Support space consisting of a cage wash area, storage rooms, and a shipping and receiving site.
  • Mechanical and Systems Operations include 4 utility chases, an environmental monitoring room, automatic watering system and a waste disposal area.
