Welcome to the web page of the Hispanic Employment Special Emphasis Program. As a Special Emphasis Program Manager, I work to identify and eliminate barriers present in the recruitment and retention of individuals from Hispanic and other traditionally underrepresented groups and also help to coordinate outreach and recruitment activities. Please contact me if you have suggestions, questions, or to learn more about USDA recruitment programs.
NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
The period of September 15-October 15 is designated as National Hispanic Heritage Month. This observance recognizes the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and celebrates Hispanic heritage and culture. The term Hispanic refers to people of “Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture origin, regardless of race.” The beginning of the observance coincides with the independence anniversary of five Central American countries– Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, and was expanded to Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988.
