SUBJECT:  2008 PWA Prevention of Sexual Harassment Policy Statement

On June 25, 2008, Dr. Knipling issued a policy statement that prohibits Sexual Harassment in the workplace.  As Area Director, I strongly support this policy and I am committed to ensuring a professional work environment free of sexual harassing behavior for all employees of the Pacific West Area.  I expect the same commitment from each of you.

Sexual harassment is not merely an offensive working condition, it is against the law.  It is a form of discrimination that can have a devastating impact on affected individuals.  It can diminish self-esteem, inhibit performance and significantly disrupt the lives of individuals.

Dr. Knipling’s statement clearly outlines the following:  “What is Sexual Harassment,” “Examples of Sexual Harassment,” the “Manager and Supervisor Roles Regarding Sexual Harassment,” “Steps to Address Sexual Harassment,” and “How to File a Complaint.”  I suggest you read these sections carefully so that you can recognize actions of sexual harassment and know what steps need to be taken to stop it.

Ignoring a problem is tolerating the problem.  No one should have to tolerate any act of a sexual or discriminatory nature which is deliberate, repeated, unwelcome or detrimental to a professional work environment.  Sexual harassment is a serious issue that we must all work together to eliminate.
