U.S. Department of Labor announces nearly $200,000 grant to assist Oregon workers dislocated by the closure of a Weyerhaeuser Co. facility

WASHINGTONThe U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $197,925 grant to assist approximately 50 Oregon workers affected by the closure of the Weyerhaeuser Co.’s Bauman Plywood and Planer site located in Lebanon, Ore.

“This $197,925 grant will help workers access employment services and training opportunities so they can transition to new jobs in growing industries,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

On January 31, Weyerhaeuser announced that it would permanently close the Lebanon facility as of March 30.  The state conducted Rapid Response activities immediately following the announcement to inform affected workers of the services available to assist them as they prepare for new employment.

The grant, awarded to the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development, will provide affected workers with an array of re-employment services including assessment, individual counseling, case management, and career and occupational training.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines.
