Export Trade Promotion: The Export Trade Advisory Council
Examples of Export Trade Advisory Council Activities

Examples of activities undertaken by the Export Trade Advisory Council (ETAC) include the following:

  • In the late 1990s, ETAC sponsored the attendance of approximately 45 firms from Appalachia in three European Commission-sponsored Europartenariat events in Sweden, Italy, and France, directly resulting in at least $25 million worth of new sales within the first year alone.
  • In partnership with the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development and University of Kentucky, ARC co-sponsored a two-and-a-half day conference entitled Race for the Future: Appalachia's Export Summit designed to make trade economics understandable to a lay audience and hence promote trade opportunities to a broader audience in the Region.
  • ARC co-sponsored the conference Tools for Trade: Technology and Best Practices for Export Programs in 1998 for state and local trade development professionals in Asheville, North Carolina, in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Commerce and Advantage West, a state-supported, regional economic development agency. The conference brought together Appalachian trade professionals and vendors of new technologies and practices to focus on real world applications.
  • ETAC exhibited handmade and manufactured home furnishings, building materials, and art from nearly 175 Appalachian firms in the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show in London, UK, in 2000.
  • In December 2002, ETAC led 18 companies on a trade mission to Mexico City, Monterrey, and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. One participating company, New Lexington Fire Equipment Company of Rockwood, Pennsylvania, had never exported. The company recently made its first ever international sale as a direct result of the ARC-led mission.
  • ETAC assisted in the development of a major Commission research report, Analysis of Global Competitiveness of Selected Industries and Clusters in the Appalachian Region.
  • ETAC is currently recruiting small to medium-sized Appalachian firms in a major international trade event, Furniture China 2005, scheduled for September 14-17, 2005, at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Shanghai, China.
