Warmer Water From the American Coast to the
International Date Line
August 21, 1997
In August, the white area of sea level 5 to 12 inches
above normal (and warmer than normal by 3-5 degrees
Fahrenheit) extended from the American coast to the
International Date Line.
Near Australia, the purple area of sea level well
below (5 to 12 inches below) average was growing with
time. Ocean temperatures in this region were unusually low.
Under these conditions, the oceans provided less moisture
and energy to the atmosphere and thus contributed to drought
conditions in Australia and Indonesia.
