This true-color Terra MODIS image of the Maldive Islands was acquired December 24, 2002. The Maldives is an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, south of the Laccadive (Lakshadweep) Islands and southwest of India.s southern tip. The archipelago is made up of 1190 islands grouped into 26 atolls, of which less than 300 are inhabited by just over 300,000 people. The islands of the Maldives are especially sensitive to rising sea levels and erosion, since 80 percent of the islands are 1 meter or less above sea level.
