US Department of Labor's Hurricane Recovery Assistance US Department of Labor’s DOL Natural Disaster Assistance Programs This web page provides information on the U.S. Department of Labor efforts to support communities and individuals affected by Hurricane Katrina. Unemployment Insurance This website provides information on the US Department of Labor’s Unemployment Insurance Program. In general, the Federal-State Unemployment Insurance Program provides unemployment benefits to eligible workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own (as determined under State law), and meet other eligibility requirements of State law. This link provides access to State specific information on unemployment benefits, employment assistance, or employer information. Disaster Unemployment Assistance for Hurricane Survivors The U.S. Department of Labor oversees DUA and coordinates with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which provides the funds for payment of DUA and state administration. The Department of Labor is working with state and local governments in disaster areas and relief sites to issue unemployment insurance and disaster unemployment assistance. National Emergency Grants Upon a FEMA declaration of Public Assistance (infrastructure repair), National Emergency Grant (NEG) funds are made available to states to either create temporary employment for individuals permanently or temporarily dislocated by the disaster in the clean up of public and nonprofit facilities, or to provide humanitarian assistance to disaster victims. Work on private property is restricted to the homes of individuals who qualify for assistance under the Federal home weatherization program - basically, the elderly and economically disadvantaged.
