REQUEST FOR COMMENT ON RUMINANT FEED DRAFT RULE -- MAMMALIAN PROTEINS PROHIBITED IN RUMINANT FEED
On April 15, 1997, FDA put a Federal Register notice on display announcing the availability of a draft rule that would provide that animal protein derived from mammalian tissues is a food additive subject to certain provisions in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The Agency is making this draft available because of the complex scientific and regulatory issues involved regarding transmissible spongiform encephalopathies and ruminant feeds.
The Agency received and considered more than 1375 comments on the Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and the Proposed Rule on ruminant feeds. The Agency also held two public forums on the proposed rule and considered the comments in the complete transcripts of these meetings. This request is for comments, including questions and concerns, about the specific language in the draft rule.

Written comments on the draft rule must be received by 4:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Saving Time on April 28, 1997. All comments should be sent to the Dockets Management Branch (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 12420 Parklawn Drive, Room 1-23, Rockville, MD 20857.
