Several large fires were burning in arid landscape of central Kazakhstan on June 21, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite acquired this image. Dark brown burn scars around the fires (marked with red dots) show where the fires have already burned. The top of the image is dominated by south central Kazakhstan. Uzbekistan is in the bottom left corner of the image, and Kyrgyzstan forms the bottom right corner. The top of Tajikistan can be seen just right of center in the bottom of the image.
