    RESEARCH INVOLVING HUMAN SUBJECTS

    The Department of Defense is committed to providing the highest level of protection to human subjects who participate in research that is sponsored by the Department.  The Assistant Director for Regulatory Affairs oversees the establishment and execution of policy related to research involving human subjects. Research must be conducted in accordance with all applicable directives, statues, and laws. Human subject research is governed and regulated by Title 32, Part 219 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 10, Part 980 of the United States Code, and Department of Defense Directive 3216.2. In addition to Department wide policy, each DoD Component organization issues regulations and instructions to implement the higher level guidance for the protection of human subjects.     RESEARCH INVOLVING ANIMALS

    The Department of Defense is committed to providing humane care and treatment of the animals that are used in research that is sponsored by the Department. The Department stresses research protocol design that reduces the number of animals used and relies to the greatest practical extent upon non-animal alternatives.

    The Assistant Director for Regulatory Affairs oversees the establishment and execution of policy related to the humane use and treatment of research animals. Research must be conducted in accordance with all applicable directives, statues, and laws. Animal research in the Department of Defense is governed by the Animal Welfare Act (Title 7 of the United States Code) and Department of Defense Directive 3216.1. These documents, as well as the Department's Animal Care and Use Reports, are available for viewing through this web site. In addition to Department wide policy, each military service issues regulations and instructions to implement the higher level guidance for the humane care and use of research animals.
