Look, There in the Sky!
In the Spring of 1996, comet Hyakutake made a spectacular run through the
solar system. In a great surprise to high-energy astronomers,
it proved to be a detectable
source of X-rays! The strength of the X-ray emission and its rapid time
variability were not expected. However, comets have long been a source of
amazement to human kind. Whether viewed as omens of evil or as remnants of
solar system formation, they are always a source of interest and awe.
