NHLBI has launched a new heart-health agenda, as part of its
efforts to meet the cardiovascular health goals and objectives in the Federal
Government's Healthy People 2010 report, issued in January 2000. The NHLBI
effort is aimed at achieving cardiovascular health for all Americans.
The agenda has four key "Performance Goals," which are
shown in the diagram below. These goals target differing stages in the progress
of cardiovascular disease, from early prevention to the prevention of recurrent
cardiovascular events and of complications.
To meet the goals, NHLBI is undertaking a wide range of
"Performance Projects," each geared to measurable results in order to
evaluate progress.
A key element of the Performance Projects is reaching into
communities to forge partnerships for health, especially for those areas at
high-risk for cardiovascular disease. The Performance Projects also try to
bring vital information and resources where they are most needed.
