C2P2 Results

C2P2 Logo Through collaborative efforts, C2P2 seeks to increase the beneficial use of CCPs. The following information indicates how the program and the utilization of CCPs have progressed.

Case Studies

Learn about coal combustion product applications through case studies.

Membership

C2P2 hoped to have 50 organizations join the program in its first year. C2P2 exceeded this goal by receiving 110 charter member registrations by the close of 2003. As of April 2008, more than 171 organizations are participating in the program.

Utilization of CCPs

C2P2 aims to increase the quantity of CCPs beneficially reused from 31 percent in 2001 to 50 percent by 2011. In 2005, the utilization rate was 40.3 percent.

Utilization of Fly Ash in Concrete

C2P2 also strives to increase the use of coal fly ash in concrete from 12.4 million metric tons per year in 2001 to 18.6 million metric tons by 2011. In 2005, 15.0 million metric tons of fly ash were used in the production of concrete.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction

In addition, C2P2 established a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from concrete production by approximately 5.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2011, compared to a 2001 baseline. Each ton of fly ash that replaces cement in the production of concrete reduces greenhouse gases emissions by a little less than a ton of carbon dioxide equivalents. In 2005, the total use of fly ash in concrete reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 13.5 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents.
