Highlights from State of Louisiana Minority Business Profile

  • In 2002, there were over 57,000 minority 1997 - 2002 firms in Louisiana, generating $6.1 billion in gross receipts.
  • These firms also employed over 57,000 workers.
  • Minority firms represented 18% of all ‘classifiable’ firms located in the state.
  • The number of minority firms in Louisiana increased by 38% between 1997 and 2002, compared to 11% for all ‘classifiable’ firms in the state.
  • Louisiana had the 15th largest minority population in the country, numbering nearly 1.7 million or 37.8% of the state’s total population.
  • In Louisiana, only Asian Americans have reached parity in their number of firms and annual gross receipts when compared to their representation in the state’s population. No other minority group has reached parity in the number of firms and gross receipts.
  • If minority business activity in Louisiana matched the state’s minority population percentage in 2002, the number of minority firms in the state would have exceeded 121,000 and they would have generated over $42 billion in gross receipts and employed almost 308,000 workers.

  • In 2002, there were over 7,000 minority firms in the Baton Rouge-Pierre Part, Louisiana - Combined Statistical Area (CSA).
  • Minority firms generated about $1 billion in annual gross receipts and employed over 11,000 workers.
  • Minority firms represented 14 percent of all U.S. firms located in the Baton Rouge–Pierre Part, LA – CSA in 2002.
  • On average, minority-owned firms grossed $136,000 annually.
  • In 2002, minority-owned firms in the Baton Rouge - Pierre Part, LA – CSA were more concentrated in the following industries: other services; administrative support, waste management, and remediation services; and professional, scientific, and technical services.
  • There were over 1,360 minority firms in other services, almost 960 in administrative support, waste management, and remediation services, and over 730 in professional, scientific, and technical services.

Highlights from City of New Orleans Business Profile

  • In 2002, there were almost 26,000 minority firms in the New Orleans-Metairie-Bogalusa, Louisiana Combined Statistical Area (CSA).
  • Minority firms generated over $2.2 billion in gross receipts.
  • Minority firms represented 23% of all U.S. firms located in the CSA, in 2002.
  • On average, minority-owned firms grossed $86,000 annually.
  • In 2002, minority-owned firms in the New Orleans-Metairie-Bogalusa, Louisiana – CSA were more concentrated in the following industries: other services; health care and social assistance; and administrative support, waste management, and remediation services.
  • There were over 5,300 minority firms in other services, nearly 3,400 in health care and social assistance, and about 2,900 in administrative support, waste management, and remediation services.
