Air pollution problems are an ongoing problem for northern Italy, but the haze seen backed up against the Alps in this image may be due to the scattered fires that were detected by MODIS on May 30, 2002. Clockwise from left around Italy are France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. To the south, the islands of Corsica and Sardinia are located in the Mediterranean Sea.
