Dr. Rhee says some parents had an "authoritative" style, in which they set standards but listened to and connected with their children. She says others had an "authoritarian" style that focused more on simply setting rules. And she says the "authoritative parents" were less likely to have overweight first graders.

"The authoritative parents had the best outcome. Only 3.9 percent of children with authoritative mothers were overweight, compared with 17.1 percent of children with authoritarian mothers." (10 seconds)
