Bent's Old Fort was like a ship on the ocean with all the necessary rooms for workers, trade and storage.  Click on the tour below for a narrated slide show tour by Park Interpreter, Bob Kisthart. This tour provides an excellent way to prepare you for your visit to the fort. Please allow some time for these programs to load.

In 1846-47, young Lewis Garrard travelled by way of the Santa Fe Trail to the fort and observed and recorded in his diary the colorful lives of the Plains men and women. Click on Lewis Garrard below for a lively account of his experiences at Bent's Old Fort.

Wagon on the Santa Fe Trail

Did You Know?
Bent’s Fort was the only place on the Santa Fe Trail where wagons could be repaired and supplies replenished. Typically it would take 50 to 60 days or more for ox drawn wagons to make the 600 mile journey from Missouri. It would still be another month of travel before they reached Santa Fe.
