Corrective Action Process

The corrective action process involves analyzing findings from the PERM measurement, identifying root causes of errors and developing corrective actions. The corrective action process aims to reduce major error causes, and identify trends in errors or other factors for purpose of reducing improper payments. States will prepare their corrective action plans (CAP) using the instructions provided to states by CMS in the State Health Official letter dated October 23, 2007.

This page offers guidance to the States on the essential steps in developing the CAP.

Update November 2008 - The CAP due date for Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 and 2007 States has been extended from December 1, 2008 to April 1, 2009.
