Where can I find employment statistics by gender/ethnicity in the health and human services field?

Answer

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, publishes the "Current Population Survey." You can find statistics by employment status, characteristics of the employed, and many other topics. To locate these numbers:

  1. Go to http://www.bls.gov/cps/.
  2. Once you are there, follow the link to "Tables Created by BLS."
  3. Next, under the heading of "Annual average data," select the "Characteristics of the employed" link.
  4. Look for "Table 18, Employed persons by detailed industry, sex, race, and Hispanic or Latino ethnicity," and select either the TXT or PDF format.
  5. Scroll down the page to "Health care and social assistance," where you can find more detailed data on the different kinds of services, with total employment numbers or percentages for Women, Black or African American, Asian, and Hispanic or Latino.
