September 17 & 18
The Orbiting Carbon Observatory is the first NASA mission designed to measure atmospheric carbon dioxide with the precision, resolution and coverage needed to quantify the processes controlling the buildup of this important greenhouse gas. The Earth-orbiting satellite will carry a single instrument designed to measure the absorption of reflected sunlight by carbon dioxide and molecular oxygen at near-infrared wavelengths. Measurements taken by the mission are expected to improve our understanding of the nature and processes that are regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide in our atmosphere today, enabling more reliable forecasts of carbon dioxide buildup and its impact on climate change.
