Sullivan, M.D., has announced the appointment of A. Kenton Williams, Ed.D., as associate commissioner of the Head Start Bureau in the department's Administration for Children and Families. "Kenton Williams brings to the Head Start Bureau a career that has been devoted to strengthening America's families," said Secretary Sullivan. "He will work closely with Head Start projects to maintain the quality of program services, increase coordination with other programs, strengthen volunteer community support and address the problems of substance abuse and illiteracy." Prior to his appointment as associate commissioner, Williams was regional administrator for HHS' Office of Human Development Services in Boston. In that capacity, he administered programs serving the region's persons with developmental disabilities, the social services block grant program and children, youth and families--including Head Start. Before joining the HHS Boston Regional Office, he served as HDS regional administrator for the Kansas City, Mo., office. Williams also held positions as assistant regional director, Office of Child Development, in Kansas City; executive director, Niles Home for Children, Kansas City; director, Division of Social Services, state of Nebraska; and district administrator, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Champaign, Ill. Williams has authored a number of publications on social services and children. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and active in the March of Dimes, United Way and the Educational Partnership Committee of the Boston Federal Executive Board. A native of Charleston, W.Va., he holds a doctorate in education degree from the University of Massachusetts. He also has a master's degree in social work from St. Louis University and a master's in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Regis College, Denver, Colo. ###
