King today announced that Social Security's nationwide toll-free telephone number will change effective 7 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30. The new number, 1-800-772-1213, is the result of a mandatory change in SSA's long-distance carrier and replaces the previous number which was introduced in October 1988. "Although our number is changing, our comprehensive service is not. Under this new number, SSA will continue to provide personal, toll-free 800 number telephone service from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. in each time zone each business day," said Commissioner King. The 800 number service provides the public with another option--for many, the most convenient one--for doing business with SSA. Most Social Security business can be conducted by phone. This includes filing for benefits, applying for a Social Security number, reporting a missing check or simply asking a question. For those who prefer, SSA offers face-to-face service, as well as phone service, at all local Social Security offices nationwide. In fact, you can call the 800 number to make an appointment with your local office to conduct business at your convenience. # # #
