Levi Hill "Hillotypes"
about 1850

"Color" daguerreotypes
Images like this one from Nature represent Levi Hill's attempts to produce the first color photographs--"Hillotypes"--in the 1850s and 1860s. Hill published his complicated formulas in his book "Heliochromy," but received mixed reviews. Hill's work remains controversial and is still debated in the photographic history community.
