Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Program To Give Awards of $120,000 for Outstanding Health Care Programs
Each year, the Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Program (CHLP) honors ten outstanding individuals who overcome daunting odds to expand access to health care and social services to underserved and isolated populations in communities across the United States. Each is awarded $120,000: $105,000 for program support and $15,000 as a personal stipend.

CHLP welcomes nominations from consumers, community leaders, health professionals, government officials and others who have been personally inspired by people providing essential community health services. However, nominations from development and public relations departments or professional grant writers cannot be accepted.

The nomination process begins with a Letter of Intent (LOI), which can be sent to the CHLP at any time during the year but is due no later than September 22, 2004. Nomination packets will be sent automatically to nominators whose candidates fit all of CHLP's eligibility criteria. Completed nominations are due in our office by November 10. The program's National Advisory Committee then reviews nominations. Site visits are scheduled in the Spring. The ten individuals selected as Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leaders are announced in the late summer.

For more details, see the Community Health Leaders program.

HHS Awards $11.6 Million in Grants to Improve Access to Potentially Life-Saving Defibrillators in Rural Communities
Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson recently announced that $11.6 million in grants will be available to increase access to on-the-spot help for people who suffer heart attacks in rural America.

The Rural Access to Emergency Devices Grants will go to rural communities in 49 states to purchase FDA-approved automated external defibrillators and train emergency and community personnel to use the devices. Automatic defibrillators are lightweight, portable devices that provide an electrical shock capable of restoring the normal heart rhythm of heart attack victims, greatly improving chances of survival. The program is administered by HHS' Health Resources and services Administration (HRSA), through its Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP).

An applicant must be part of a statewide, regional, or multi-county consortium or rural community organizations applying as a community partnership. Each community partnership must have a designated lead applicant as the grantee of record and to act as the fiscal agent for the partnership. To qualify as a statewide community partnership, all eligible counties do not have to be included. However, a state level office must be the lead applicant.

For additional information, visit the Rural Access to Emergency Devices Grant Program Web site, or contact the ORHP at 301-443-2803.
