Subject: [Users] HPSS upgrade is finished

Greetings NERSC Users, The upgrade of the Archive or User HPSS system is now complete and the system is available to users. In order to access the system, you must remember to: 1. Download a new HPSS client (only for offsite access): If you use HSI or HTAR from a non-NERSC computational system, you must download a new client fromhttps://www.nersc.gov/projects/download/hpss/ Failure to download a new client will result in a failed authentication request. You need a v3.4+ HSI and HTAR client to communicate with HPSS after the upgrade. The NERSC computational systems are updated by the Mass Storage Group and will already have the new HSI and HTAR clients upon completion of the upgrade. 2. Use a new HPSS authentication token: If you have an existing $HOME/.netrc file, you should remove any entries referring to 'machine archive' or 'machine archive.nersc.gov' before trying to connect to the archive HPSS system. HSI, HTAR, PFTP and FTP will use a NERSC specific 'authentication token' when connecting to HPSS. If using a NERSC provided client (HSI, HTAR, PFTP; or FTP on the NERSC compute platforms), the first time you connect to the archive HPSS system, you will be prompted for your NIM password and an authentication token will be generated and stored in $HOME/.netrc. After completing this step, you will be able to connect to HPSS without typing a password. The session will look like this: jhick@davinci:/usr/common/homes/j/jhick> hsi -h archive.nersc.gov Generating .netrc entry... jhick@auth2.nersc.gov's password: <ENTER YOUR NIM PASSWORD> If using an FTP client from off site, or if you wish to use an alternative method for generating the HPSS token, please seehttp://www.nersc.gov/nusers/systems/hpss/accounts_passwords.php 3. Note the new location of your home and project directories: Previous to the upgrade, a user's home directory could be located anywhere in the HPSS namespace. After the upgrade, home directories will now be in /home/<first initial of moniker>/<moniker>. For example, user 'franky' will be in /home/f/franky after logging into Archive HPSS. We will move your HPSS home directory to this location and create a symbolic link from your old homedir to this location. If you have scripts that hardcode or reference the old path, please update them accordingly. HPSS project directories will also be moved to /home/projects/<project dir>. The old project directory (/nersc/projects/<project dir>) will be a symbolic link to the new location. Please change scripts to reflect the new location. 4. The syntax HSI uses to specify the HPSS system to connect to has changed. For connecting to the 'archive' HPSS system, any of the following invocations may be used: $ hsi $ hsi -h archive $ hsi -h archive.nersc.gov The following is no longer valid syntax: $ hsi archive $ hsi archive.nersc.gov You will need to update any scripts or automated processes which use the old syntax. _______________________________________________ Users mailing list Users@nersc.gov
