Type 2 diabetes is a concern for teens as well as adults. Teens who are overweight are especially at risk. But parents and teenagers can take steps to getting the weight down.

National Diabetes Education Program Chair Dr. Francine Kaufman of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles:

[Dr. Francine Kaufman speaks] “The main thing is really to focus on these healthy lifestyle habits. And when you do that, not only does weight get better, but so does the cholesterol problems and high blood pressure problems.”

Healthy eating and being active can reduce the risk of diabetes. Fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and skim milk and water instead of juice and other sugary sweet beverages are good for a healthy diet. And doing 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week to break a sweat is a good tip for being more active.
