University-based Health Centers and Initiatives

Capital Area Rural Health Roundtable at the George Mason University Center for Health Policy, Research, and Ethics
This site provides information on the roundtable's rural health forums. The forums provide briefings on rural health issues for the representatives of Washington-area organizations, agencies, and institutions that have a strong interest in rural America and rural health care.

Rural Policy Research Institute
The institute conducts research and facilitates public dialogue to help policymakers understand the rural impacts of public policies and programs. The institute's programs on rural health involve ongoing research on the potential impacts of market forces, legislative policy, and regulatory changes on rural health care provision and organization. The site includes publications, data, and resources.

RuralNet: Marshall University School of Medicine Rural Health Resource
The RuralNet site provides information on rural health topics and online resources, including information specific to rural health care in West Virginia.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for Health Promotion
The center's mission is to increase the capacity of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and collaborating local, state, regional, and national agencies in addressing issues related to health promotion and disease prevention. This site describes the center's health initiatives and organization. The center is one of 14 health promotion and disease prevention centers supported nationally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health
The center aims to improve the health of rural Kentuckians and strengthen rural communities by making health education available to rural people. Education programs provided by the center include nursing, clinical laboratory sciences, and physical therapy, as well as a family-practice medical residency. The Division of Community Programs and Health Policy works with rural communities and advocates developing and delivering health services in Kentucky. Information on community programs, research, and training are offered on the center's site.

West Virginia University Prevention Research Center
The center works to advance health promotion and disease prevention in the Appalachian Region through research, training, and prevention programs, policies, and strategies. Additionally, the center collaborates with local, state, and regional partners to provide community outreach, development, and training opportunities that are responsive to community needs. Research summaries and links to additional resources are available on the site.

Federal Agencies

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
CDC is the lead federal agency for protecting the public's health and safety through disease prevention and control, and health promotion. CDC's site includes information by topic, and contains data and statistics, and training and employment information.

Federal Office of Rural Health Policy
The Office of Rural Health Policy works with the government at the federal, state, and local levels and with the private sector to seek solutions to rural health care problems. The site offers funding information by state, policy updates, and resources on promoting better rural health care.

Healthfinder, a health information site sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services
Developed by the Department of Health and Human Services, together with other Federal agencies, this site has been recognized as a key resource for finding the best government and nonprofit health and human services information on the Internet. Healthfinder links to carefully selected information from over 1,800 health-related organizations.

Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
The Health Resources and Services Administration's mission is to improve and expand access to quality health care for all citizens, including low-income, uninsured, isolated, vulnerable, and special-needs populations. Key program areas include primary health care and rural health policy. The site includes information on program areas and funding opportunities, as well as data and statistics, including state profiles and community health status indicators.

National Cancer Institute
This definitive site for information on cancer offers education and information on all types of cancer, clinical trials, statistics, research programs, and research funding.

National Drug Intelligence Center
This site provides useful information on OxyContin use and abuse, an emerging problem in much of Appalachia.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
One of the world's foremost medical research centers, and the federal focal point for medical research in the United States. This site includes research and grant information, and an index of health topics and the NIH institutes and centers that research them.

Rural Assistance Center
This site is a source of information on all Health and Human Services programs and grants available to rural communities. The site will expand to include searchable databases, a Congressional bill tracking feature, and a quarterly newsletter. Information on more than 225 different federal health and human services programs will be available to communities, researchers, and state and national organizations. The site is part of the HHS Rural Initiative.

Rural Information Center Health Service
A joint project of the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the USDA National Agricultural Library, the Rural Information Center Health Service collects and distributes information on rural health issues, such as recruitment and retention of health care personnel, programs for special populations, facilities administration, network development, and service delivery. The site includes publications, FAQs, and information on federal grant opportunities.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
SAMHSA's mission is to strengthen health care capacity to provide prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services for substance abuse and mental illnesses. It works in partnership with states, communities, and private organizations to address the needs of people with substance-abuse and mental illnesses, as well as the community risk factors that contribute to these illnesses. The site includes information clearinghouses, programs, policy issues, and grant and contract opportunities. SAMHSA is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

State and National Associations and Organizations

InteliHealth, featuring Harvard Medical School's consumer health information
Includes information on diseases and conditions, and health and wellness; contains a drug resource center; hosts online communities; and offers information targeted toward seniors, teens, women, and men.

National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH)
NOSORH promotes rural health through state and community leadership. The organization also fosters and promotes legislation, information exchange, education, and liaison activities with all state offices of rural health, the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, the National Rural Health Association, and other rural health organizations. The Web site details NOSORH activities and provides contact information for each of the state offices of rural health.

National Rural Health Association
A nonprofit association that serves as a forum for the exchange and dissemination of ideas, information, and research related to improving rural health. The association offers leadership on rural health issues through advocacy, communication, education, and research. Its site offers research, education opportunities, and legislation information.

A list of state rural health offices and associations.

Toborg Associates, a Washington-based consulting firm, with a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), has developed and tested high quality, culturally sensitive, health education materials designed to prevent alcohol use among Appalachian adolescents.
