Data

Intermodal Transportation Database
Detailed statistical information about all modes of transportation, as well as key financial and economic trends, is now available through the United States Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The new Web site, called TransStats, provides access to more than 100 transportation-related databases.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics
BTS publishes the Transportation Statistics Annual Report, National Transportation Statistics, and State Transportation Profiles, which are available online through BTS' National Transportation Library. BTS also tracks transportation trends and public attitudes, from reports on airline delays to an innovative tool that helps identify intermodal transportation bottlenecks: the BTS Geographic Information Service.

Reports and Research

Report Outlines New Intermodal Transportation Network to Improve Freight Movement in the U.S.
A report issued by the Gulf/Rivers Intermodal Partnership called Where the Rudders Meet the Roads, recommends ways to expand waterways in the U.S. transportation system by more efficiently developing intermodal connections with highways and railways. The report calls for new short sea marine services seamlessly connected to other land and water transportation hubs, and it calls for the introduction of container-on-barge services, patterned after the practice of moving freight containers on both trucks and railroads. The report was the result of work by more then 100 transportation professionals, aimed at finding opportunities to expand transportation capacity and improve both safety and efficiency in freight movement.

Transportation Options Increasing in Western North Carolina
The Land of Sky Regional Council is helping to sponsor and coordinate a regional program to improve public awareness and understanding of the transportation alternatives available to residents and visitors. This new public outreach effort grew from the findings of an ARC-sponsored study entitled Transportation Options for Western North Carolina: A Regional Plan for Mobility Choices. The study identified ways to better coordinate transportation services and identified needs for new services to fill gaps in a multi-county area surrounding Asheville, North Carolina. Based on their findings, the region has received several demonstration grants from the North Carolina Department of Transportation to expand public transportation services over many new routes.
