January 23 Deadline for 2002 Appalachian Youth Entrepreneurship Education Springboard Applications

$2,000 will be awarded to six outstanding K–12 entrepreneurial education programs in the Appalachian Region

WASHINGTON, January 10, 2002—The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is accepting applications for its first Appalachian Youth Entrepreneurship Education Springboard Awards through January 23, 2002.

The $2,000 awards will be made to as many as six outstanding business-training programs targeted toward rural Appalachian youth, elementary school age through high school age. In addition, an outstanding teacher and student from each of the recognized programs will be honored in Washington, D.C., at the March 2002 annual meeting of the Development District Association of Appalachia, and at an awards luncheon at the U.S. Capitol sponsored by the National Commission on Entrepreneurship.

Eligible programs may be affiliated with public schools, private nonprofit educational institutions, community service organizations, local development districts, or community action agencies. All programs must serve young people within the 13-state Appalachian Region. For-profit organizations and private individuals are not eligible to apply.

The application deadline is January 23, 2002. Complete application materials are available from Deann Reed at the Appalachian Regional Commission (202-884-7786), and on the ARC Web site.

Partners joining ARC in supporting the Appalachian Youth Entrepreneurship Education Springboard Awards include the U.S. Department of Education, the National Commission on Entrepreneurship, the National Future Farmers of America Organization, Future Business Leaders of America, DECA, the Consortium of Entrepreneurial Education, and the Development District Association of Appalachia.
