Figure 1. Age of children in foster care.

It is a bar graph that shows, for each of four age ranges, the percentage of the 727 children in the NSCAW foster care who fell within that age range. The horizontal axis shows the four age ranges (1 to 2 years, 3 to 5 years, 6 to 10 years, and 11 years or older). The vertical axis is labeled “Percent.”  The first bar shows that 24 percent of the sample were 1 to 2 years old a few months after the study began in 1999. The second bar shows that 17 percent were 3 to 5 years old. The third bar shows that 32 percent were 6 to 10 years old. The fourth bar shows that 27 percent were 11 years old or older. Figure 2. Race and ethnicity of children in foster care.

It is a bar graph that shows, for each of four race/ethnicity categories, the percentage of the 727 children in the NSCAW foster care sample who belonged to that category. The horizontal axis shows the four race/ethnicity categories (African American, non-Hispanic; White, non-Hispanic; Hispanic; and Other). The vertical axis is labeled “Percent.” The first bar shows that 45 percent of the sample were African American, non-Hispanic. The second bar shows that 31 percent were white, non-Hispanic. The third bar shows that 17 percent were Hispanic. The fourth bar shows that 7 percent were “Other.” (back to Figure 2)

 

Figure 3. Most serious type of maltreatment by age.

It is a bar graph that shows what percentage of the children in the sample, by age, suffered each of five different kinds of maltreatment as their most serious experience of maltreatment. The horizontal axis shows the four age ranges (1 to 2 years, 3 to 5 years, 6 to 10 years, and 11 years or older). The vertical axis is labeled “Percent.” A legend codes the five kinds of maltreatment experienced by children (physical abuse, failure to provide, failure to supervise, sexual abuse, and other).

The first set of bars compares prevalence of different categories of “most serious” maltreatment suffered by 1- to 2-year-olds. The first bar shows that 11 percent of this age group suffered physical abuse as the most serious experience of maltreatment. The second bar shows that 48 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to provide for the child. The third bar shows that 21 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to supervise. The fourth bar shows that 0 percent suffered sexual abuse. The fifth bar shows that 19 percent suffered some other form of maltreatment.

The second set of bars compares prevalence of different kinds of “most serious’ maltreatment suffered by 3- to 5-year-olds. The first bar shows that 8 percent of this age group suffered physical abuse as the most serious experience of maltreatment. The second bar shows that 45 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to provide for the child. The third bar shows that 37 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to supervise. The fourth bar shows that 8 percent suffered sexual abuse. The fifth bar shows that 2 percent suffered some other form of maltreatment.

The third set of bars compares prevalence of different kinds of “most serious” maltreatment suffered by 6- to 10-year-olds. The first bar shows that 13 percent of this age group suffered physical abuse as the most serious experience of maltreatment. The second bar shows that 32 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to provide for the child. The third bar shows that 39 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to supervise. The fourth bar shows that 13 percent suffered sexual abuse. The fifth bar shows that 3 percent suffered some other form of maltreatment.

The second bar shows that 25 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to provide for the child. The third bar shows that 34 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to supervise. The fourth bar shows that 5 percent suffered sexual abuse. The fifth bar shows that 14 percent suffered some other form of maltreatment.

The fourth set of bars compares prevalence of different categories of “most serious” maltreatment suffered by children in the “Other” race/ethnicity category. The first bar shows that 14 percent of this race/ethnicity group suffered physical abuse as their most serious experience of maltreatment. The second bar shows that 39 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to provide for the child. The third bar shows that 33 percent suffered a caregiver’s failure to supervise. It is a bar graph that shows the percentage, by foster care placement setting, of children in the NSCAW foster care sample at the time of interview. The horizontal axis shows the four placement setting categories (non-kin home, kin care, group home, and other). The vertical axis is labeled “Percent.”  The first bar shows that 58 percent of children in the sample were placed in non-kin homes. The second bar shows that 32 percent were placed in kin care. The third bar shows that 9 percent were placed in group homes. The fourth bar shows that 1 percent were placed in other settings. (back to Figure 5)

The first bar in this set shows that 58 percent of African American, non-Hispanic children were placed in foster homes. The second bar shows that 32 percent were placed in kin care. The third bar shows that 7 percent were placed in group homes. The fourth bar shows that 3 percent were placed in other foster care settings.

The second set of bars compares the percentages of white, non-Hispanic children in the various foster care settings. The first bar in this set shows that 61 percent of white, non-Hispanic children were placed in foster homes. The second bar shows that 27 percent were placed in kin care. The third bar shows that 11 percent were placed in group homes. The fourth bar shows that 1 percent were placed in other foster care settings.

The third set of bars compares the percentages of Hispanic children in the various foster care settings. The first bar in this set shows that 47 percent of Hispanic children were placed in foster homes. The second bar shows that 48 percent were placed in kin care. The fourth set of bars compares the percentages of children of “other” race/ethnicity in the various foster care settings. The first bar in this set shows that 62 percent of these children were placed in foster homes. The second bar shows that 21 percent were placed in kin care. It is a bar graph that shows the percentage of children in the sample, by type of most serious maltreatment suffered, who were placed in various foster care settings. The horizontal axis shows the four categories of  “most serious” maltreatment suffered by the child (physical maltreatment, sexual maltreatment, failure of caregiver to provide for the child, and failure of caregiver to supervise the child). The vertical axis is labeled “Percent.” A legend codes the four categories of foster care setting (foster home, kin care, group home, and other).

The first bar in this set shows that 60 percent of children who suffered physical maltreatment as their most serious experience were placed in foster homes. The third set of bars compares, in terms of foster care settings, the percentages of children whose “most serious” experience of maltreatment was the caregiver’s failure to provide. The first bar in this set shows that 63 percent of children who suffered physical maltreatment as their “most serious” experience of abuse were placed in foster homes. The second bar shows that 31 percent were placed in kin care. The third bar shows that 6 percent were placed in group homes. The fourth bar shows that 0 percent were placed in some other foster care setting.

The fourth set of bars compares, in terms of foster care settings, the percentages of children whose “most serious” experience of maltreatment was the caregiver’s failure to supervise. The first bar in this set shows that 55 percent of children who suffered physical maltreatment as their “most serious’ experience of abuse were placed in foster homes. The second bar shows that 41 percent were placed in kin care. The third bar shows that 3 percent were placed in group homes.
