U.S. Department of Labor announces a nearly $628,000 grant to assist workers in Maine affected by home construction industry layoffs

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $627,961 grant to assist approximately 87 workers affected by the sudden closure of Wood Structures Inc. headquartered in Biddeford, Maine, with a manufacturing facility in Saco, Maine.

"The sudden loss of jobs within these communities warrants a response that offers workers opportunities to improve their current skills or pursue new careers in growing regional industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

The Maine Department of Labor will receive the grant, which will provide workers with access to dislocated worker services. These services may include individual career counseling, skills assessment, and basic and occupational skills training.

Wood Structures laid off workers on Dec. 9, 2008, and March 5, 2009. On March 16, the company abruptly ceased operating, resulting in more layoffs. On March 18, company officials issued a public notice announcing Wood Structures' closure, layoffs and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Resources for this National Emergency Grant are from the secretary of labor's discretionary fund under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

National Emergency Grants are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
