Update on Pistachio Product Recall New!

The FDA has completed its inspection of Salmonella contamination in pistachios and pistachio products at Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., Terra Bella, Calif., and presented a 483 Inspection Report to the firm.

Most of the products associated with the recall appear to have been identified. Although fewer products are being added to the FDA's searchable database, consumers should continue to check the FDA website (http://www.fda.gov/pistachios) for current information on recalled products. FDA’s recall database contains pistachios and pistachio products that have been recalled because they contain pistachios recalled by Setton Pistachio.

Consumers should not eat pistachios or food products containing them (such as pistachio bakery goods and pistachio ice cream) until they can determine that the products do not contain pistachios recalled by Setton.  FDA's warning does not apply to pistachios and pistachio products not associated with recalled pistachios from Setton Pistachio.

CAL-PURE co-op of California pistachio growers and the Western Pistachio Association have established a Web site that lists firms that have informed the web site sponsors that their products do not contain pistachios from Setton. Information on this Web site has not been verified by the FDA, and the Agency is not responsible for its contents: www.pistachiorecall.org.

The FDA is advising wholesalers, retailers, and operators of restaurants and food service establishments not to sell or serve any pistachios or pistachio-containing products until the source of the pistachios can be determined. Firms should check with their suppliers to determine whether the source of the pistachios is Setton. If the source is Setton and the products are subject to this recall, then the pistachios and pistachio products should not be sold.

The FDA is helping the pistachio industry address the public health risks associated with Salmonella and to understand appropriate control procedures to prevent contamination. As part of this effort, on April 3, 2009, the FDA issued a letter to pistachio processors in the United States reminding them of their legal responsibility to ensure that the products they are providing are safe for consumption. The FDA intends to examine current pistachio industry practices and issue guidance to the industry that provides additional information on measures to be taken to prevent Salmonella contamination.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Information for Industry

On April 19, 2009, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., updated its recall communications, including sending written notice to its wholesale customers, to make clear that the firm's recall includes certain pistachios from the 2007 crop year with particular identification codes.  Setton is recalling all lots of roasted in-shell pistachios and roasted shelled pistachios that were produced from nuts harvested in 2008 and some pistachios from the 2007 crop that were processed on the same equipment as the 2008 crop, since September 1, 2008. The firm also is recalling those raw shelled pistachios from the 2008 crop (and some from the 2007 crop that were also processed on the same equipment as the 2008 crop) that are not subsequently roasted prior to retail sale.

FDA is advising wholesalers, retailers and operators of restaurants and food service establishments not to sell or serve any roasted pistachios or products containing roasted pistachios until the source of the pistachios can be determined. They also should not be serving or selling any raw shelled pistachios or products containing raw pistachios until the source of the pistachios can be determined.  Firms should check with their suppliers to determine whether the source of the pistachios is Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc.  If the source is Setton and the pistachios are subject to the recall, then the pistachios and pistachio products made with them should not be sold.

In addition to checking with your supplier, you may be able to confirm that pistachios or pistachio products contain recalled Setton pistachios by checking FDA's  searchable database created to track such information. The searchable database is available on the FDA website at this link: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/pistachiorecall/index.cfm.  This list is updated daily and reflects all products that have been recalled containing pistachios from Setton as of the date indicated.  Additional product recalls may occur as new recipients of Setton pistachios are identified.  PLEASE NOTE:  If you received a letter from your supplier that is dated prior to April 19, 2009, the date that Setton Pistachio sent a clarification to its wholesale customers regarding inclusion of certain 2007 crop year pistachios in the recall, the letter you received may not reflect all products that are affected by the recall.  Therefore, FDA advises that you contact your supplier immediately to confirm that none of the products you have received contain Setton pistachios that have been recalled.
