FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 2, 2009 -- Tropical Nut and Fruit Company of Columbus, OH, is recalling its 16 ounce packages of "GRANULATED PEANUTS" because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled "GRANULATED PEANUTS" was sold in the Tropical Nut and Fruit, Columbus, Ohio Factory Outlet Store.

The product comes in a 16 ounce, clear polyurethane resealable bag, labeled “GRANULATED PEANUTS", Tropical Nut and Fruit, Columbus, Ohio.  The lot numbers being recalled are clearly identified on the black and white label, 8148B, 8168B, 8288B and 8289B.  There is no UPC assigned to the bags.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The peanuts are linked to the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak from products produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant. Production of the product has been suspended while FDA continues their investigation.

Consumers who have purchased 16 ounce packages of "GRANULATED PEANUTS" are urged to return them to Tropical Nut and Fruit, Columbus, Ohio for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-538-3941, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
