FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 7, 2009 -- PaleyBar of Portland, Oregon is recalling Jam-n-Peanuts Bars, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The bars were manufactured at Betty Lou's, Inc. in McMinnville, Oregon in a facility using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Jam-n-Peanuts Bars were distributed online (via internet), at Paley's Place Bistro & Bar, and through Portland retailers: Food Front Cooperative Grocery, PastaWorks, Whole Foods Market NW, Whole Foods Market Bridgeport Village, 21st Avenue Bicycles, and Fat Tire Farm, Anna Banannas, New Seasons Concordia and Sellwood, Sunset Cycles.

The recall only affects Jam-n-Peanuts Bars with "Best By" dates of:

23 July 2009
18 March 2009

You can find the "Best By" date printed on the wrapper of individual bars, as well as on the underside of each box. Each bar is individually wrapped with a label that reads "…Paleybar Jam'n Peanuts…" and UPC code 897426000024. Boxes contain 12 bars and are labeled as "Paleybar Jam'n Peanuts" with UPC code 897426000123.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut product received by Betty Lou was manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America. PaleyBar has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

We ask that you please examine any bars you may have, and return those with affected dates to the address below for a full refund. For customers in the Portland Metro area, we would be glad to pick up remaining bars at your convenience. Please feel free to contact PaleyBar with any questions or concerns regarding this matter.
