Dingman’s Dairy Announces Recall of Med. Granulated Peanuts Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 3, 2009 -- Dingman’s Dairy a distributor in Paterson, NJ is recalling the Med. Granulated Peanuts 6/3.5 lbs. bags because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infection (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled Granulated Peanuts were distributed to retail stores in NJ, MD, and NY.  

The product comes in 6/ 3.5 lbs. bags it is marked with Lot # 8137 and Lot # 8220. Item # 530MDCH. (no UPC code).

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Salmonella in peanuts and peanut products processed in its Blakely, GA facility.

Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased the 3.5 lbs bags of Granulated peanuts are urged to return them to Dingman’s Dairy and will receive a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Dingman’s
