American Importing Company Announces a Voluntary Recall of a Variety of Trail Mixes Because of a Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 5, 2009 -- Minneapolis, Minnesota-American Importing Company is voluntarily recalling the following items because it has the potential to contain salmonella. This recall applies only to the brands and codes listed.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. American Importing Company has initiated this voluntary recall in response to a recently expanded recall notification received from the Peanut Corporation of America’s Blakely, Georgia plant, and includes roasted peanuts.

American Importing Co. has not received any consumer illness complaints associated with its products. However, it is taking precautionary steps, including removal of the impacted products from store shelves and the distribution system.
