GLOBE's Climate Research Campaign will empower students, teachers and communities around the world to realize their individual and collective potential to impact one of the most challenging issues of our time. Planning for the worldwide GLOBE Student Research Campaign on Climate will occur over a 2-year period, beginning in January 2009. The Campaign will be launched with a major media event in 2011 and will culminate with a high-profile international student research conference in 2013.

Our goals are to: (a) involve over 1,000,000 students in Climate Research; (b) enhance environmental and climate literacy for millions of people around the world; (c) empower students, teachers, and community members to take action on climate-related environmental issues; and (d) create a compelling model for 21st century environmental science education based on grade-level appropriate research and learning experiences. To achieve these goals, GLOBE is engaging its worldwide network of GLOBE Partners, teachers, scientists, alumni, schools and countries, leveraging its rich set of scientific protocols, educational materials, and data, and enlisting the support of some of the world's leading climate change scientists, internationally recognized education and outreach experts, businesses, foundations, and policy makers.

The Climate Research Campaign will provide a variety of opportunities for meaningful, relevant and important student research that leads to understanding and action at local to global scales. GLOBE has always been considered a unique educational force to educate, train, inspire and encourage young people to preserve the environment for current and future generations. We now need your help, ideas, and support to make the Climate Research Campaign a success.

January 2009 - Global Climate Research and Education Workshop

On 25-28 January 2009, 43 climate scientists, educators, administrators, and students from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America met at the offices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in Geneva, Switzerland. The goal of the Global Climate Research and Education Workshop was to bring together the climate science and climate education communities to establish and secure their commitment to the global climate research campaign. A primary task was to employ the collective interdisciplinary expertise of the participants to identify researchable questions in areas such as climate and human health; climate, weather and water; climate and energy; and climate and biodiversity.

Through an online workspace, approximately 150 cyber participants were able to participate in pre- and post-workshop discussions.
