This chart shows the current plan for missions to Mars in 2009 and beyond. It shows the Mars Science Laboratory in 2009, two competing Mars Aeronomy mission candidates in 2013, and the 2013 European Space Agency’s ExoMars mission which will include U.S. Instruments. The chart also shows three alternative mission concepts for the 2016 opportunity. Finally, this aggressive program of Mars robotic exploration leads to a Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission with two elements shown in the chart in 2018 and 2020 respectively.
